Under 16 Winter Championship 2016

DAY TWO:   GBA third in Winter Championship

After two stunning wins on Saturday, Geelong struggled to kick on in the Sunday games, losing 1-5 to Dandenong in a match rescheduled from the first day – because of ground conditions – before a subsequent 0-4 to the same team in what was effectively a semi-final as the series needed to be reduced by a round each.

Conceding just six runs for the tournament, Dandenong earned the winter title by blanking Ringwood 6-0 in the Sunday afternoon final. With two wins and two losses from its four games, Geelong finished in a very creditable third placing.

Congratulations to Dandenong on an outstanding series in trying playing conditions. Well done to all players, officials, families and supporters and a special shout out to the NEBA officials and volunteers whose efforts helped enable the series to proceed after a deluge of rain in recent times.

DAY ONE:  Under 16s dominant early in Championship

Heavy rain over the past few days and the resultant damage to playing surfaces were not enough to deter the four sides contesting the Under 16 Winter Championship being played in Wangaratta this weekend.

Geelong started its campaign with a bang, thumping Ringwood 12-0 in its opening game, followed by another blistering offensive display in dispensing with Diamond Valley 10-1. Lachlan Hockey pitched a one-hitter against Ringwood, while Julius Crino and Angus McNee starred in offence with three hits apiece. Spanking a home run in his two hits against Diamond Valley, Lachlan Hockey was again one of the GBA stars, along with Harun Pelja (three hits) and Jarryd Wood (who added three hits to his three innings on the hill that conceded just one hit).

With local officials working feverishly to bring grounds up to acceptable condition, Geelong and Ringwood played their opening game down at Benalla before heading back to Wangaratta for their second match. The late start to Day One play necessitated a reschedule of Round Three, which will be played first-up on Sunday as the first of four games to decide the double round-robin Championship.

Geelong remains the only unbeaten side, posting some remarkable hitting statistics in its first two games – producing thirty hits over nine innings played, with only six strike outs as the pitching and defence combined to allow just one run in the two games.

Geelong Baseball Association is pleased to announce the following squad that will contest the Under 16 Winter Championship to be held in Wangaratta over 2 and 3 July.

The tournament has drawn four teams from across the state - Dandenong, Ringwood, Diamond Valley and Geelong. The series will be a double round robin, with the highest placed team declared the winner.

Congratulations to all players and staff on their selection. Best wishes for the series, which is bound to be another high-quality tournament.
